Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of AUC Atlas, including its website, accounts, professor profiles and reviews, course information, course materials, GPA calculator, degree-progression tools, search functions, uploads, downloads, and any other feature or service made available through AUC Atlas (collectively, the "Service").

By accessing the Service, creating an account, submitting a review, uploading or downloading material, saving academic information, or otherwise using the Service in a manner that constitutes legally valid acceptance, you acknowledge that you have read and understood these Terms and agree to comply with them.

If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not use the Service.

These Terms are intended to operate subject to the mandatory provisions of Egyptian law, including where applicable the Egyptian Civil Code promulgated by Law No. 131 of 1948, Consumer Protection Law No. 181 of 2018 and its Executive Regulations, Law No. 175 of 2018 on Combating Information Technology Crimes, Intellectual Property Rights Protection Law No. 82 of 2002 as amended, Personal Data Protection Law No. 151 of 2020 and its Executive Regulations, and any other applicable Egyptian legislation.

Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts, waives, or overrides any right, obligation, remedy, or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted under Egyptian law.

AUC Atlas is an independent student-oriented platform. It is not owned, operated, sponsored, endorsed, approved, or controlled by The American University in Cairo ("AUC"), unless AUC Atlas expressly states otherwise following an official arrangement.

AUC Atlas does not speak on behalf of AUC. Nothing published through the Service constitutes an official statement, academic decision, policy, instruction, recommendation, representation, or guarantee made by AUC.

References to AUC, its professors, departments, programs, course codes, academic requirements, trademarks, names, or other identifying information are used only to identify the academic subjects to which information on AUC Atlas relates.

All trademarks, names, logos, photographs, course materials, and other intellectual property belonging to AUC, faculty members, students, publishers, or other third parties remain the property of their respective owners.

You may use AUC Atlas only to the extent that you are legally permitted to do so. Certain activities, including accepting contractual obligations, uploading content, granting intellectual-property licenses, or entering other legally significant arrangements, may require full legal capacity under Egyptian law.

If you do not possess full legal capacity, you may use features involving contractual obligations only with any consent, authorization, supervision, or representation required by applicable law from a parent, guardian, or legal representative.

If you create an account, you must provide information that is accurate to the extent reasonably required, protect your login credentials, and take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized access to your account.

You must not sell, transfer, share, borrow, steal, or otherwise misuse another person's account, credentials, university email address, authentication code, or session.

AUC Atlas may require verification through an AUC email address or another verification method. Successful verification does not constitute verification or endorsement by AUC and does not guarantee that a person remains enrolled, employed, or otherwise affiliated with AUC.

AUC Atlas may implement email verification, session controls, multi-factor authentication, rate limits, anti-abuse systems, upload restrictions, or other reasonable security measures. Circumventing or attempting to circumvent such measures is prohibited.

AUC Atlas is an informational and student-community resource. It is not an academic adviser, registrar, admissions office, department, faculty authority, accreditation authority, or official university information system.

The Service may display course descriptions, prerequisites, professor information, reviews, ratings, uploaded educational material, academic requirements, search results, and other information originating from public sources, university sources, users, or third parties.

Academic information can change without notice and may contain mistakes, omissions, outdated material, exceptions, or information that does not apply to your individual academic situation.

You must independently verify any important academic information through official AUC sources before acting on it. Official AUC policies, catalogs, advisers, departments, registrar records, and direct university communications take precedence over information displayed through AUC Atlas.

You should not rely exclusively on AUC Atlas when making decisions concerning course registration, adding or dropping courses, prerequisites, transfer credits, graduation, degree requirements, academic standing, scholarships, petitions, deadlines, or any other matter capable of affecting your academic record.

Any GPA calculator provided by AUC Atlas is an informational calculation tool only. A displayed GPA is not an official university GPA and does not modify, replace, or override any transcript or university record.

GPA calculations may be affected by incorrect inputs, rounding, repeated courses, grading-policy changes, transfer credits, pass/fail treatment, exclusions, incomplete records, or other circumstances that may not be represented by the calculator.

Degree-progression features are provided only to help users organize and visualize academic requirements. They are not official degree audits and do not establish graduation eligibility.

Degree requirements may depend on catalog year, declaration date, concentration, substitutions, petitions, exemptions, transfer credits, residency requirements, minimum grades, accreditation requirements, university core requirements, departmental decisions, and other factors that may not be fully represented by AUC Atlas.

Marking a requirement as complete on AUC Atlas does not mean that AUC considers the requirement satisfied. Completing every item shown by AUC Atlas does not guarantee graduation or degree eligibility.

Professor profiles may contain information obtained from public sources, university sources, users, or other available information. Academic titles, departments, courses, research interests, contact details, photographs, and other professional information may change.

Unless expressly identified otherwise, professor reviews and ratings are User Content reflecting individual users' experiences and opinions and are not statements made or endorsed by AUC Atlas.

AUC Atlas does not guarantee that a reviewer actually attended a particular course, that every review is factually correct, that ratings are statistically representative, or that a review reflects the views of the wider student body.

Users should distinguish personal opinion from factual allegations and should limit reviews to genuine academic experiences, including matters such as teaching style, clarity, organization, workload, assessment practices, accessibility, communication, and classroom experience.

You must not submit reviews, ratings, reports, profile information, or other content that is unlawful or that you know to be false or materially misleading.

• Do not present rumors or speculation as established fact.
• Do not submit defamatory statements or unlawful attacks on another person's reputation.
• Do not threaten, harass, stalk, intimidate, blackmail, or encourage violence against another person.
• Do not disclose private or confidential personal information without lawful authority.
• Do not publish student IDs, private telephone numbers, home addresses, private emails, medical information, financial information, family information, identification documents, private messages, or other non-public personal information.
• Do not make knowingly false accusations of criminal, academic, professional, or other serious misconduct.
• Do not impersonate another student, professor, employee, university representative, or other person.
• Do not manipulate ratings or reviews through automation, coordinated campaigns, fake accounts, payment, retaliation, incentives, or other deceptive conduct.
• Do not submit content unrelated to the legitimate academic purpose of the feature being used.

AUC Atlas may reject, remove, hide, restrict, preserve, or investigate content reasonably believed to violate these Terms or applicable law.

"User Content" includes reviews, ratings, uploaded files, titles, descriptions, profile information, photographs, reports, feedback, and any other material submitted by users.

You remain responsible for User Content you submit and represent, to the extent legally capable of doing so, that you have the legal right to submit it and that its submission does not violate applicable law or another person's intellectual-property, privacy, confidentiality, contractual, or other legal rights.

You must not submit material obtained through theft, hacking, unauthorized access, deception, credential misuse, or another unlawful method.

Submitting User Content does not transfer ownership of your intellectual property to AUC Atlas except for the limited license necessary to operate the Service.

When you submit User Content, you grant AUC Atlas a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use that content only as reasonably necessary to operate, maintain, protect, moderate, improve, display, distribute, back up, and provide the Service.

This may include hosting, storing, reproducing for technical purposes, caching, generating previews or thumbnails, reformatting for compatibility, displaying content to users, permitting downloads where downloading is the intended purpose of the upload, transmitting material through hosting or storage providers, moderating content, and investigating reported violations.

AUC Atlas may allow service providers acting on its behalf to perform these functions only to the extent reasonably necessary to provide the Service.

This license does not give AUC Atlas ownership of your User Content. The license ends when content is permanently deleted from active systems except where limited continued retention is lawful or reasonably necessary for backups, legal obligations, security records, disputes, investigations, or copies already lawfully obtained by other users.

You may upload educational material only where you own the necessary rights, have permission from the rights holder, or otherwise have a lawful basis to make the material available.

The fact that material is educational does not automatically make unrestricted copying or online distribution lawful.

• Do not upload entire copyrighted textbooks without authorization.
• Do not upload paid course packs or commercially sold educational content where redistribution is not permitted.
• Do not upload confidential instructor materials or content expressly restricted from redistribution.
• Do not upload stolen files or material obtained through unauthorized access.
• Do not upload an examination that is currently taking place or confidential future examination material.
• Do not upload illegally obtained answer keys, protected assessment databases, credentials, or restricted university files.
• Do not use AUC Atlas to facilitate cheating, academic fraud, unauthorized disclosure of assessment material, or unlawful access to university systems.

Past examination or course material may still be protected by copyright, confidentiality obligations, or university rules. Users remain responsible for determining whether sharing particular material is lawful and permitted.

If AUC Atlas offers an anonymous submission option, "anonymous" ordinarily means that the user's identity will not be publicly displayed with that submission. It does not necessarily mean that AUC Atlas possesses no account, technical, moderation, security, or upload records capable of identifying the user.

AUC Atlas may retain such information where lawful and reasonably necessary and may disclose information where required by applicable law or a valid request or order from a competent judicial, investigative, or governmental authority.

Users must not use AUC Atlas to unlawfully collect, publish, disclose, scrape, profile, sell, or otherwise process another person's personal data.

Personal-data processing performed by AUC Atlas is additionally governed by the AUC Atlas Privacy Notice and applicable Egyptian data-protection law.

You must use the Service lawfully and must not interfere with its operation, security, users, infrastructure, or data.

• Do not gain or attempt to gain unauthorized access to accounts, servers, databases, APIs, networks, files, administrative functions, or protected systems.
• Do not introduce malware, ransomware, spyware, malicious scripts, viruses, or other harmful code.
• Do not probe, exploit, or attempt to exploit security vulnerabilities without prior written authorization.
• Do not conduct denial-of-service attacks or intentionally interfere with Service availability.
• Do not circumvent rate limits, authentication, upload quotas, access controls, content restrictions, or security protections.
• Do not scrape, harvest, or process personal information unlawfully.
• Do not use automated systems to manipulate ratings, reviews, downloads, visitor counts, search results, or other platform metrics.
• Do not create fraudulent accounts, impersonate others, submit forged information, or misrepresent your identity.
• Do not use the Service for phishing, credential theft, fraud, hacking, extortion, harassment, stalking, or other unlawful conduct.
• Do not knowingly submit false or abusive content reports in order to silence, harass, or disadvantage another person.

To the extent permitted by law, AUC Atlas may review, reject, remove, hide, restrict, preserve, disable access to, or otherwise moderate User Content where it reasonably believes action is necessary to enforce these Terms, comply with law, respond to a credible complaint, protect another person's rights, protect privacy or safety, protect Service security, prevent fraud or abuse, address intellectual-property concerns, or reduce material legal or operational risk.

AUC Atlas is not required to publish every submission and does not guarantee that published content will remain available indefinitely.

The fact that AUC Atlas moderates some content does not mean that every item has been manually reviewed, independently verified, endorsed, or approved.

Users, professors, rights holders, and other affected persons may report content they reasonably believe is unlawful, infringing, defamatory, materially inaccurate, privacy-invasive, threatening, fraudulent, confidential, impersonating another person, or otherwise prohibited by these Terms.

A rights holder or authorized representative who believes content on AUC Atlas infringes intellectual-property rights may request review or removal of that content.

A useful complaint should identify the complainant, the protected work or right, the specific AUC Atlas content at issue, sufficient information to locate that content, the complainant's ownership or authority, and the reason the use is believed to be unauthorized.

AUC Atlas may request supporting documentation and may temporarily or permanently restrict disputed content while a credible claim is investigated.

A user whose material has been removed may provide evidence of ownership, authorization, lawful use, mistaken identification, or another applicable legal basis.

AUC Atlas may restrict, suspend, or terminate accounts that repeatedly submit infringing material or deliberately misuse the Service for intellectual-property violations.

AUC Atlas is not a permanent archival, file-storage, or backup service. Users should keep independent copies of any files or information they need.

Content may become unavailable because of account deletion, moderation, storage limits, copyright complaints, technical errors, third-party provider failures, security incidents, legal obligations, feature changes, or other operational circumstances.

User-uploaded files originate from third parties. AUC Atlas does not guarantee that every file is authentic, complete, accurate, current, free from defects or malicious content, lawfully distributed, or suitable for a particular purpose.

You should use appropriate device-security measures when downloading or opening third-party files. Nothing in this section excludes any security or other duty that cannot lawfully be excluded under Egyptian law.

AUC Atlas may depend on third-party hosting, cloud-storage, authentication, email, content-delivery, analytics, security, or other infrastructure providers.

Independent third parties may experience interruptions, change their products, change APIs, impose limits, suffer security incidents, suspend services, or cease operation. AUC Atlas does not control independent third parties and is not responsible for their separate acts or omissions except where applicable law imposes responsibility that cannot validly be excluded.

The Service may also link to AUC websites or other third-party websites. A link does not constitute endorsement, partnership, sponsorship, approval, or responsibility for the linked site.

Independent websites are governed by their own terms, policies, security practices, and legal responsibilities.

AUC Atlas may add, modify, redesign, restrict, suspend, discontinue, or replace features where reasonably necessary for development, security, legal compliance, moderation, cost control, maintenance, product quality, or other legitimate operational purposes.

AUC Atlas does not guarantee uninterrupted availability, a particular uptime percentage, permanent access to any file or feature, compatibility with every device or browser, or that every technical error will be corrected immediately.

Maintenance, cyber incidents, provider failures, legal requirements, infrastructure problems, internet failures, or other circumstances may cause temporary or permanent interruptions.

Where a change materially affects existing legal rights or obligations, AUC Atlas will take any notice or renewed-acceptance steps required by applicable law.

To the extent permitted by law, AUC Atlas may restrict, suspend, or terminate an account or particular feature where there is a reasonable basis to believe that these Terms were materially or repeatedly violated, the account poses a security or fraud risk, the user repeatedly infringed intellectual-property rights, the Service is being manipulated, the user engaged in serious harassment or abuse, continued access creates material legal risk, or action is required by law.

Immediate action may be taken where reasonably necessary for security, safety, prevention of serious harm, or legal compliance.

Users may request deletion of their accounts through available account controls or contact channels.

Account deletion does not necessarily require immediate deletion of every associated record. Subject to applicable law and the Privacy Notice, AUC Atlas may retain limited information reasonably necessary for security, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, legal claims, legal retention obligations, moderation records, abuse investigations, or enforcement of these Terms.

To the maximum extent permitted by Egyptian law, the Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis.

Except for warranties, guarantees, rights, or obligations that cannot lawfully be excluded, AUC Atlas does not guarantee that information is completely accurate, that academic information is official, that professor reviews are true or representative, that uploaded files are correct or lawful, that GPA calculations are official, that degree-progression information is complete, that the Service will always be available, or that the Service will meet every user's individual needs.

AUC Atlas does not guarantee admission, enrollment, passing grades, improved grades, graduation, degree completion, successful course registration, successful petitions, scholarship eligibility, professor availability, employment, or any other academic or professional outcome.

You remain responsible for independently evaluating information and verifying important matters with appropriate official sources before relying on them.

This section applies only to the maximum extent permitted by Egyptian law. AUC Atlas does not seek to exclude or restrict liability where Egyptian law does not permit such exclusion or restriction.

Nothing in these Terms is intended to exclude or restrict liability arising from AUC Atlas's own fraud, gross fault or gross negligence where such liability cannot lawfully be excluded, liability arising from unlawful acts where contractual exclusion is prohibited, mandatory statutory consumer rights, or any other liability that applicable law requires AUC Atlas to bear.

Subject to those mandatory limitations, AUC Atlas shall not be contractually liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or purely economic losses resulting from use of, inability to use, or reliance on the Service where such liability may lawfully be excluded.

To the extent permitted by law, this includes losses resulting from reliance on inaccurate course information, prerequisites, GPA calculations, degree-progression calculations, professor reviews, User Content, registration decisions, graduation decisions, academic penalties, lost academic opportunities, scholarship decisions, professor-selection decisions, removal or loss of User Content, unavailable files, third-party infrastructure failures, malicious or defective third-party files, unauthorized use of content by another user, changes made by AUC or another institution, external websites, or circumstances outside AUC Atlas's reasonable control.

Where contractual liability may lawfully be subject to a monetary cap, AUC Atlas's aggregate contractual liability arising from the particular Service giving rise to a claim shall not exceed the amount actually paid by the claimant to AUC Atlas for that Service during the twelve months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, if any, unless applying that limitation would violate mandatory Egyptian law.

To the maximum extent permitted by Egyptian law and subject to any restrictions arising from legal capacity, you agree to compensate AUC Atlas and its lawful operators, representatives, contractors, and service providers for third-party claims, losses, damages, liabilities, judgments, penalties, and reasonable legal expenses arising directly from unlawful User Content you submit, your infringement of another person's intellectual-property rights, your unlawful disclosure of personal or confidential information, fraud or deliberate misconduct by you, intentional unauthorized access, your material violation of these Terms, or your violation of applicable law.

This section does not require a user to indemnify AUC Atlas for AUC Atlas's own fraud, gross fault, unlawful conduct, or another liability that cannot legally be transferred, excluded, or restricted.

To the extent permitted by Egyptian law, AUC Atlas shall not be treated as breaching these Terms solely because performance is prevented or materially delayed by an event beyond its reasonable control, including major internet or power failures, natural disasters, fires, floods, war, civil disorder, governmental actions, widespread cyberattacks, or failures of essential third-party infrastructure, subject to the applicable Egyptian legal rules governing force majeure, impossibility, and unforeseen events.

AUC Atlas may preserve records, restrict content, remove content, or disclose information where required by applicable Egyptian law or pursuant to a valid request, judgment, warrant, order, or direction issued by a competent judicial, investigative, regulatory, or governmental authority.

AUC Atlas may also preserve information where reasonably necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal rights, subject to applicable data-protection and other mandatory laws.

Except for User Content and third-party material, original software, original written content, branding, interface elements, graphics, database organization, and other material created for AUC Atlas may be owned by or licensed to the AUC Atlas operator and protected by applicable intellectual-property law.

Nothing in these Terms grants users ownership of AUC Atlas intellectual property or any AUC or third-party intellectual property.

Use of AUC Atlas does not create an employment relationship, partnership, joint venture, agency relationship, fiduciary relationship, adviser-client relationship, or authority for a user to bind AUC Atlas.

AUC Atlas may update these Terms where reasonably necessary to reflect changes to the Service, security requirements, legal or regulatory developments, operational changes, new features, or changes to user rights and responsibilities.

Material amendments will apply prospectively and AUC Atlas will provide any notice or renewed acceptance required by applicable law. Changes do not retroactively eliminate rights or liabilities that applicable law does not allow AUC Atlas to alter.

If a competent court determines that part of these Terms is invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable, that provision shall be interpreted or limited to the maximum lawful extent where possible. If it cannot be preserved, the invalid portion shall be severed without invalidating the remainder unless applicable law requires otherwise.

A failure by AUC Atlas to immediately enforce a provision does not permanently waive the right to enforce it later.

These Terms, together with the Privacy Notice and any additional terms expressly applicable to a particular feature, constitute the agreement governing use of AUC Atlas to the extent permitted by applicable law.

These Terms and contractual disputes arising from or connected with the Service shall be governed by the laws of the Arab Republic of Egypt, without prejudice to any mandatory legal rule that applies regardless of contractual choice of law.

Subject to mandatory jurisdiction rules under Egyptian law, disputes arising from or connected with these Terms or the Service shall be submitted to the competent courts of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Where Egyptian law assigns jurisdiction to an Economic Court or another specialized court, the legally competent court shall have jurisdiction.

Nothing in this section removes any mandatory right of a consumer or other person to bring a claim before a court, regulator, authority, or other body where Egyptian law expressly grants such a right.

Questions, legal notices, intellectual-property complaints, privacy-related content complaints, requests for correction or removal, and other reports should identify the relevant page, file, course, professor, or content and explain the reason for the request.
